What reformation?
Software Development is still a relatively new discipline when compared to the other engineering disciplines like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, etc... Software Developers do not have the benefit of centuries of practice where expertise is handed down from one generation of developers to the next. While tools and technologies have been quick to emerge, software development processes are often either heavy weight, beauracratic and time consumming or perhaps on the other end of the scale, almost non-existant.
I have seen software development teams actually cross their fingers in hopes that their software deployment will not fail. When it does fail I have seen the entire team to go into panic mode pointing fingers at each other attempting to deflect blame from themselves. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Software Sevelopment team that will stand behind their work because of their extremely high level of confidence in their builds since every checkin has launched an automated suite of regression tests ensuring that their builds will not introduced new critical bugs? This is possible to achieve and will greatly improve the satisfaction each developer has in their work and will also greatly improve the confidence management has in this development team.
